| Grandpa came to America to
live with his family. He didn’t speak any
English. Each day when the family members were
at work Grandpa would spend his time in the park,
walking, enjoying the fresh air, and feeding the
ducks a few crumbs he brought along.
So that he would be able to get a little something
to eat, when he wanted it, his daughter taught
him to say, "Apple pie and coffee."
Each day he would go into the nearby diner, climb
on a stool at the counter and say to the waitress,
"Apple pie and coffee."
This worked well for him for awhile until he just
couldn't take another piece of apple pie. He asked
his daughter to teach him to say, "Ham sandwich
and a coke." He went to the park the next
day, practicing his new words.
When he got hungry, he went to the diner climbed
onto the stool at the counter and waited his turn.
When the waitress asked for his order he proudly
said, "Ham sandwich and a coke." To
which the waitress asked, "White or rye?"
Grandpa hesitated and replied,
"Apple pie and coffee!" |
